Product Photography: Why You Should Use a Professional Photographer

It can be tempting to think that if you want to promote your business’s products, you could take all the pictures you need yourself. After all, it’s a static object, so it’s not going to move, and anyone can take good-quality images with a phone, right?

Wrong.

Lee Hayes, who specialises in product photography in Essex, Suffolk and the surrounding area, highlights some of the key reasons why it’s always worth investing in the services of a professional photographer when it comes to taking images to promote your business’s products.

The Quality of the Image

Using professional equipment, such as a top-of-the-range DSLR camera, rather than a phone, will produce much higher quality images. But that’s not all - a professional has a strong knowledge of lighting and composition that you can’t easily teach. They are also more likely to have access to the right sort of props, lighting, etcetera, which will show your products off to their full potential.

As a result of the much higher quality images, you will likely see increased sales, making it much more cost-effective to use a professional photographer rather than taking these pictures yourself.

The Variety of Media

It’s not just about taking thumbnail images for a website, or social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. What if you want to use print media as well?

While a small image may be good enough for a product page on a website or a Facebook post, it probably won’t make the grade for a glossy colour magazine or a banner or billboard.

The Psychological Factor

If someone sees a high-quality image, whether it is online or in print media, they will be far more likely to think favourably of a brand than if the image is poor.

For this reason, you need to at least compete with your rivals. If they are using pros, you need to as well. If they are not, then doing so will give you a competitive advantage. Professional images create the impression that you run a professional business across the board.

It Saves You Time

If your business sells lots of products, you should really have images of all of them on your website, even if some of the products are only slightly different from one another. And with potentially many products, have you really got the time to take pictures of all of them as well as match them up?

Using a professional photographer will help relieve you of this burden, allowing you and  your staff to spend more time on other business-critical or creative tasks. It’s also worth keeping in mind the old adage that a picture is worth 1,000 words as well.
